How to keep a conversation going (without forcing it)

Four habits that make conversations easier, with questions to try with someone new.

Ask open questions

Questions that start with what, how or when leave room for a real answer. Yes-or-no questions end the conversation for you.

  1. 1What’s the best thing that happened to you this week?
  2. 2What’s your hidden talent?
  3. 3Where have you always wanted to go?

Follow up before you move on

The best next question usually comes from the last answer. Ask what happened next, or how it felt.

Share something back

A conversation is a trade. Answer your own question too, so it doesn’t feel like an interview.

Go deeper slowly

Start light and only go deeper when the other person does. If answers get shorter, go back to something easier.

  1. 4What’s something that shaped who you are?
  2. 5What kind of friend are you?
  3. 6What would you like to get better at?

The New Friend deck deals one question at a time and adapts to your answers.
